Dawn Underwood, FNP-C is a provider for the internal medicine and pediatrics teams. Dawn has over 20 years of experience in primary care, addiction medicine, and patient education. She knew she wanted to go into medicine after becoming a mother at a young age.

“As a teenager and young adult, I experienced discrimination when seeking healthcare because I was a teenage mom. This was a big factor in me joining the healthcare field to try and change that stigma from the inside. In primary care, I can truly provide holistic care for the patient, help guide them and allow them to choose their healthcare path,” she shared.

As soon as she could, Dawn began taking steps to achieve her goal of changing the system from the inside out. She received an associate’s degree in nursing from Montana Tech in Butte, Montana. She then attended Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona where she received a Bachelor of Science in nursing. Dawn completed her education journey when she achieved a Master of Science in nursing from Walden University in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2014.

She recalls an important moment in her education that continues to inspire her every day in the clinic.

“A nursing instructor said to our class, ‘every person gets to drive their own ship. It is not about you; it is about the patient.’ I try to remember this with every patient I see. My job is not to tell a patient what to do, it is to educate them and give them their options so they can make an informed decision about their health and then to support them.”

For years, Dawn has provided exceptional care in rural areas such as Native American reservations across the United States and small island communities where she was the only provider for the population. Most recently, Dawn worked at Ideal Options in Great Falls, Montana where she specialized in addiction medicine. She shares that while she is passionate about addiction medicine, for some time now she has felt a longing to return to taking care of the whole individual in a way that can only be done in primary care. She looks forward to providing compassionate and personalized care to patients at the Great Falls Clinic alongside her peers.

When she is not working, Dawn surrounds herself with family and friends and fills her time expressing her creative side with crochet, macrame, knitting projects, DIY home improvement projects and other crafts.
