Great Falls Hospital welcomes board-certified orthopedic surgeon Dr. Peter D. Hanson to our growing orthopedic team. Dr. Hanson will be practicing at the new Great Falls Clinic Capital City Specialty Center in Helena, Montana.
With more than 30 years of medical experience and specialized fellowship training in foot and ankle surgery, Dr. Hanson brings a wealth of expertise to our community. He specializes in general orthopedics, treating a broad range of both upper and lower extremity conditions.
A Lifelong Legacy of Medical Care in Helena
Dr. Hanson’s path to medicine is deeply rooted in Central Montana. Before that, he grew up watching his father, Dr. Harris D. Hanson, who founded the Helena Orthopedic Clinic over 60 years ago. As a result, this lifelong exposure instilled in him a deep appreciation for community-focused healthcare.
For the past 23 years, Dr. Hanson has been dedicated to serving patients throughout Helena and Central Montana.

Advanced Training Built on an Analytical Foundation
Before earning his medical degree, Dr. Hanson completed unique undergraduate studies that gave him an analytical, precise edge in complex orthopedic procedures. His extensive educational background includes:
- Undergraduate Degrees: Mathematics (Carroll College) and Mechanical Engineering (University of Notre Dame — Go Irish!)
- Medical Degree: University of North Dakota
- Orthopedic Surgery Residency: Akron City Hospital in Akron, Ohio
- Advanced Fellowship Training: Foot and ankle surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas
This powerful blend of engineering and medical training allows Dr. Hanson to approach patient care through a lens that is both highly analytical and deeply personal.
Outside of the Clinic
When he isn’t treating patients, Dr. Hanson loves spending quality time with his wife and three children. Additionally, he fully embraces the Montana lifestyle and enjoys outdoor activities like skiing, hunting, fishing, and hiking.
