Dr. Simon Maltais is a part of the Cardiothoracic Surgery team. Dr. Maltais specializes in cardiothoracic surgery including robotically-assisted cardiac intervention, transcatheter valve implantation, heart failure and complex cardiac intervention, and aortic surgery including the Ross procedure. Dr. Maltais’ expertise and training is a welcome addition to the Great Falls Clinic Heart Center’s growing program and needs. Dr. Maltais looks forward to serving the needs of Montanans.

Originally from Quebec, Canada, Dr. Maltais began his medical career in 1996 when he received a college degree in Health Science from Bois-de-Boulogne College in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Then in 1998 he completed a medical degree from Sherbrooke University, in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. He stayed enrolled at Sherbrooke University and three years later, in 2001, Dr. Maltais finished a master’s degree in physiology. In 2009, he finished an adult cardiac surgery residency at Montreal Heart Institute – Montreal University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. After wrapping up his residency, Dr. Maltais received his doctoral degree (PhD) in biomedical sciences from Montreal Heart Institute – Montreal University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Finally, in 2010 Dr. Maltais topped off his education with a heart transplant and medical support fellowship from the Mayo Clinic School of medicine in Rochester, Minnesota, USA.

Dr. Maltais is board certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Dr. Maltais is described as a life-long student, honing his craft in the cardiothoracic surgery field by advancing his training and education by completing advanced Impella training, cardiac robotic training, and even TAVR training. Dr. Maltais is a member of the Heart and Valve Society of America, Association for Thoracic Surgery, Internal Society for Heart & Lung Transplantation, Society of Thoracic Surgeons and many more. He has published over 220 peer-reviewed publications in various cardiac surgery topics.

Dr. Maltais has also received numerous honors and special awards over the years, most recently, including ‘100 Best Doctors “Best in Medicine” by the American Health Council from 2017-Present and Teacher of The Year at Mayo Clinic School of Medicine in 2018.

Before making the move to Montana, Dr. Maltais worked across North America as a surgeon and professor at prestigious facilities as well as serving in various leadership positions. He is among the busiest cardiac surgeons in Montana for the past several years. He has further worked in several world-renowned institution like the Mayo Clinic in Rochester and Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. He has been the chair of the Mechanical Circulatory Support Council for the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplant.

In his spare time, Dr. Maltais enjoys spending time with his young family of three kids, traveling, cooking, surfing and playing tennis.
